For those tired of being jostled while standing in long supermarket lines on Saturday, technology may come to the rescue.

A German supermarket announced in 2008 that customers will be able to scan and ring up their items using mobile phones and then check out without the help of a cashier.

Customers have to snap pictures of the bar codes on all groceries as they load up the cart. At check-out time, the recorded bar codes are added up and consolidated into another bar code. An automated kiosk takes care of scanning the bar code on the mobile phone display and prompts the customer for payment.

It's unclear whether this will put an end to jostling or whether customers will simply jostle to see who gets to scan first.
