The proper name Jones is one of the most popular in U.S. and Britain. According to the UK National Trust, Jones is the second most common in the UK. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that Jones is the 4th most common. Exactly why jones became to be used as a verb to indicate a craving for something is unclear however.

Most sources believe it first surfaced in the 1960s in the U.S., where it meant to have a drug addiction. There is some speculation that this origin stems from addicts who lived in Great Jones Alley, off Great Jones Street, between Broadway and Lafayette Street in New York City.

The Urban Dictionary credits "jonesin" to Great Jones Street itself and the drug culture that once thrived there. Or perhaps there once was an infamous drug dealer by that name or maybe "Mister Jones" was a common euphemism for one's local heroin pusher. In any case, "jonesing" has meanwhile expanded to mean a strong desire for anything.

Jones is also used in the expression "keeping up with the Joneses," which alludes to the social and material envy that can exist between neighbours (buying a new Mercedes after your neighbour comes home with a new BMW).
