verb

- to be in harmony or accord; to agree

(Random House Dictionary)

---
The exact origin of the word jibe is unknown, but possibly has its roots in the Middle French giber, meaning to shake or handle with force. It's a versatile word with several meanings, including to be in harmony or in agreement (Nintendo’s apparent desire to appeal to women jibes with its strategy of appealing to everyone - Slate magazine)

Jibe is also a nautical term that refers to shifting a fore-and-aft sail from one side of a vessel to the other while sailing before the wind so as to sail on the opposite tack.

It is alternatively spelled gybe and is likely a modification of gijpen, which is the Dutch verb for the sailing manoeuvre.

A word of caution: jibe is sometimes confused with jive, which means to dance to jazz or swing music.
