rectify verb
- to correct something or to make something right
--- Rectify is from the Old French rectifier, literally to make straight (14th century), which stems from the Late Latin rectificare, to make right and the Latin rectus, meaning straight.
Rectify is typically used in a slightly formal sense as a synonym for the verbs fix or correct. Because it has an official sound to it, businesses and governments tend to use it a lot (The customer service department will work to rectify the problem as soon as possible).
The word can also be found in the fields of science and engineering to mean correcting by a mathematical calculation or an adjustment.
Finally, rectified is applied in the field of chemistry to describe the process of repeated distillation, such as in alcohol. The term "rectified spirits" refers to highly concentrated ethanol (drinking alcohol) which has been purified by means of repeated distillation. It is added to some cocktail drinks and is often used in the production of liqueurs. A well-known brand in the United States is called Everclear. One of the most popular imported brands is a rectified spirit produced in Poland with the wonderful name "Spirytus Rektyfikowany."
