ORIGIN

The word boggle has a mind-boggling and long history. We first have to go back to Middle English and the word "bugge", which referred to an image, ghost or specter, usually a frightening one. Back then, people tended to believe in ghosts and spirits, particularly evil ones.

As a result, one of the more common uses of bugge was in reference to something that scared horses at night, although in most cases what really spooked horses were other animals.

The use of boggle, as in to start with a fright, was first recorded in the late 16th century. It is meanwhile used mainly in the context of something that is bewildering or puzzling. When used together with "mind", the expression can be found in different forms such as the mind boggles, it boggles the mind and it's mind-boggling.

The modern world is full of mind-boggling things, many of which have been spawned by the Internet.

Here is some mind-boggling trivia:

- If Wikipedia.com was made into a book, it would be 2.25 million pages long and would take about 123 years to read

- 300 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute

- If the social networking site Facebook was a country, it would have the world's third-largest population, trailing only China and India

- There are around 294 billion e-mails sent every day, 90 % of which are categorised as spam (source: Radicati Group)
