--- As always, there are a couple of things IN THE PIPELINE - but that pipeline is a strange and ambiguous place.

in the pipeline idiom
- being planned, under development, pending
--- WORD ORIGIN
the word pipeline has several definitions:
- a system of pipes, used especially for the conveyance of water, gas, or petroleum products - a direct channel by which information is privately transmitted - a system through which something is conducted, especially as a means of supply
Thus the phrase "in the pipeline" stems from the idea of something that is being conveyed from one point to another, but it has to yet arrive.
Pipelines are used in many regions of the world to transport crude (unrefined) oil for instance. The longest is the Druzhba Pipeline, which is also referred to as the Comecon Pipeline. It carries oil some 4,000 kilometres from southeast Russia to points in Ukraine, Hungary, Poland, and Germany.
The Alaska Pipeline in contrast is "only" 1,300 kilometres long. It runs from the Arctic Ocean at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to the Gulf of Alaska at Valdez, Alaska. The single 1.22-metre-diameter pipeline took three years to build at a cost of around $8 billion. The pipe was constructed in six sections by five different contractors employing 21,000 people at the peak of work. 31 workers lost their lives as a result of accidents during construction.
