needy cause noun phrase
- an organisation or project that uses donations to help people in need
--- There were over 200,000 registered charities in the UK at the start of 2005. One of the oldest and most well-known is the Salvation Army, whose members can always be seen on the streets during the Christmas holidays ringing bells and asking for donations. It's founder, William Booth, began walking the streets of London in 1852 preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to the poor, homeless and hungry.
Thieves, prostitutes, gamblers, and drunkards were among Booth's first converts to Christianity. His aim was to lead people to Christ and link them to a church for further spiritual guidance. Many churches, however, did not accept Booth's followers because of their past. So he continued giving his new converts spiritual direction, challenging them to save others like themselves. Soon, they too were preaching and singing in the streets.
In 1867, Booth had only 10 full-time workers. Today the organisation is active in nearly every corner of the world and is involved in a wide range of services including disaster relief and missing persons.
