noun

- an official request for someone to appear in a court of law or pay a fine

(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

---
Citation is from the 14th century and stems from the Old French citation and the Latin "citatio," meaning a command. Citatio is a noun of action derived from the verb "citare," to summon, to put into motion, to call forward."

Citation has several definitions:

- the quoting of a book or author in support of a fact

- a listing or a recounting of facts

- in the military, an official commendation or award, especially for bravery or outstanding service

In the legal world however, a citation is not necessarily something to wish for. Citations are used to summon people to court for instance. Police also issue citations, which typically require payment of a fine, for non-criminal offenses such as traffic violations.

If you are lucky, the citation will be issued by a police officer with a sense of humor:

A man was racing down the highway, feeling secure in line of cars all traveling at the same speed. But as they passed a speed trap, his car was detected by a police radar gun. The officer pulled the driver over and issued him a citation.

After signing the citation, the driver asked the officer: "I know I was speeding, but I don't think it's fair. There were lots of other cars going just as fast. So why did I get the ticket?"

"Ever go fishing?" the policeman suddenly asked the man.

"Sure, but what does that have to do with anything?" said the driver.

The officer grinned and added, "Did you ever catch all of the fish?"
