--- The Inception of the Internet
How often have people read this statement only to wonder exactly when was the inception of the Internet? The problem is, the Internet is not like a company or a club that someone founded. No one went to the local authorities and registered it as an entity. The Internet has been an evolution...
Two major events led to the development of the Internet as we know it today however. In February 1958, the United States government created ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency), which built the first packet network between two research centres in California in 1968. ARPANET was born. By 1971, 15 research facilities were connected and it was this network that formed the basis of the communications infrastructure that we use today for Internet access.
The second major event grew from a 1989 proposal by Tim Berners-Lee, a researcher at the European High-Energy Particle Physics lab in Geneva. He advocated a tool to enable collaboration between researchers and scientists that was based on the hyper text markup language and transfer protocol (HTML, HTTP). It is this technology, incorporated in today's graphical interface web browsers, that we use to connect to and communicate with web servers around the globe.
