--- Inane dinner guests
The famous Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw once found himself seated at a dinner party beside a pompous young bore who proved to be a fountain of trivial information. Having politely entertained his neighbour's inane observations throughout the meal, Shaw finally spoke:
"You know," he began, "between the two of us we know all there is to know."
"How is that?" the man asked, intrigued.
"Well," Shaw explained, "you seem to know everything except that you're a bore - and I know that."
Etymology: Inane comes from the Latin inanitas, "emptiness, hollowness."
