WORD ORIGIN

Vicinity is from the Latin vicinitas, "neighbourhood," from vicinus "neighbour, neighbouring," and from vicus "group of houses, village." Vicus in turn is related to the -wick and -wich often found in English place names such as Brunswick and Ipswich.

Many English towns contain suffixes that can be traced to a particular period in the country's history. Some names are Celtic in origin, some are Anglo-Saxon and others go back to Roman times.

-cester (Gloucester, Leicester) - cester was the Roman word for a fort or camp.

-ham (Birmingham, Nottingham) - From the term hamlet, literally small home, related to the Frankish "haim" or home.

-shire (Lancashire, Worcestershire) - Shires are actually administrative areas or counties. The first shires were created by the Anglo-Saxons in what is now central and southern England. Shires were controlled by a royal official known as a "shire reeve" or sheriff.

-ford (Stratford, Guilford) - A ford, from the Scandinavian fjord, is a water crossing and likely originated from the Viking period.
