idiom

---
The expression "in the club," is short for "in the pudding club," a euphemism for being pregnant. That we even have a euphemism (a word or phrase used to avoid saying an unpleasant or offensive word) for being pregnant seems rather silly. But it's not surprising given that this expression evolved during the Victorian era in England, a time of not only peace and prosperity, but of a high morality and proper behaviour.

The exact origin is unknown, but the most common theories relate to the picture of a pregnant woman having pudding in her belly and the use of pudding as slang for part of the male anatomy.

Apart from being in the club, a woman can also:

- have a bun in the oven. The implication here is a bun, like something that you bake.

- swallow a watermelon seed. Some women become so large when pregnant, they probably do feel like they have grown a watermelon.

- be in the spud line. Spud is slang for potato, which is probably less stressful than carrying around a watermelon.

- Eating for two. To eat for both yourself and your unborn child.
