A mint is a place where the new coins of a country are made. The associated verb is to mint. The word itself is from the Old English "mynet," meaning coin, coinage, money. Since newly minted coins have an especially new and shiny appearance, something that is in mint condition looks like it has never been used. This expression is often used by individuals or dealers who are advertising cars for sale for instance.

The Royal Mint in the UK is one of the world's oldest, going back over 1,000 years. On its website the Royal Mint says that:

- There were estimated to be more than 27.5 billion United Kingdom coins in circulation in March 2007, with a total face value of more than £3.5 billion – all manufactured by the Royal Mint.

- A total of 1.6 billion United Kingdom coins were issued during 2006-07.

- Of the higher denomination coins, it is the 20p piece that is most in demand – with more than 2.3 billion now in circulation

- It can produce 90 million coins and blanks a week - almost five billion coins a year.
