--- WORD ORIGIN
Jeopardy can be traced back to the 14th century and the word juperti, a trick or stratagem. It later evolved to jeupardy, a chess problem. The word is borrowed from the Old French jeu parti, meaning an even or divided game (jeu=game, parti=past participle of partir, to divide). The meaning of danger or risk is first recorded around 1385. The verb jeopardise/jeopardize is from 1646 and is formed from the English jeopardy. (The Barnhart Concise Dictionary of Etymology)
Jeopardy is also the name of one of the world's longest running television quiz shows. It was created in 1964 in the U.S. and was broadcast in different versions for the first 20 years. The current version has been continuously broadcast since 1984.
The show has many international versions (France, Sweden, The Netherlands and Russia). Several German versions have been aired, including one moderated by Frank Elstner on RTL from 1994 to 1998.
