(Cambridge Dictionary)
--- Immaculate is an early 15th century term from the Latin "immaculatus," meaning unstained, which was formed from im (not, opposite) + maculatus (spotted, defiled). The original English usage, free from mental or moral pollution, was based on a figurative sense of the Latin. The literal sense of spotlessly clean or neat surfaced around 1735.
While immaculate is a common adjective meaning perfectly clean or tidy, an equally common use is in the phrase Immaculate Conception (capitalized).
According to the teachings of the Catholic Church, Immaculate Conception is the unique privilege by which the Blessed Virgin Mary was kept free of original sin through the anticipated merits of Jesus Christ while she conceived in her mother's womb. This doctrine is often wrongly believed to concern the virgin birth of Jesus.
Although the belief that Mary was sinless and conceived immaculate was widely held since at least Late Antiquity, the doctrine was not officially defined until December 8, 1854, by Pope Pius IX in his papal bull Ineffabilis Deus.
