Did you know?
icing on the cake / frosting on the cake idiom
- something that makes a good situation even better
(Cambridge Dictionary)
--- Icing, also referred to as frosting, is a mixture of sugar, water and sometimes egg whites, used to cover or decorate cakes. The term stems from its resemblance to ice, at least in the days when icing was usually white. Now there are no limits to how you can decorate a cake, including the colour.
Since most cakes are sweet and (hopefully) tasty, covering them with icing just makes them better, at least for many people, although there are certainly those who prefer their cake without it. In any case, the expression "icing on the cake" stems from this idea of making something that is already good, even better.
And then there are those who want to "have their cake and eat it too," a phrase that conveys the concept of having two good things at the same time (By working from home, I have the opportunity take care of my child. I can have my cake and eat it too!)
It's also expressed in the negative to indicate that you can't enjoy two benefits at once (You have to stop working so much if you need time for your family. You can't have your cake and eat it too.)
