humility
noun

- the quality of having a modest or low view of one’s importance

(Oxford Dictionary)

---
Humility is from the Latin "humilis," which literally means low. And in the modern sense it relates to not feeling so important about ourselves. You might have a sense of humility if you stand at the top of the Grand Canyon looking out over the broad expanse of the one of the great wonders of the world. It probably makes you feel small.

Humility is also practiced among people. Spiritual leaders such as the Dalai Lama, Mahatma Gandhi and even Pope Franciscus are and were known to have a great sense of humility. Unlike some Hollywood celebrities, pop stars and famous politicians, such "humble" (the adjective form) people do not place themselves above others.

According to one theory, the word "omerta," a dialectal form of the Italian "umilta," also stems from the Latin humilis. Omerta refers to a code of submission of individuals to the group interest. It's often associated with the Italian Mafia's pledge of allegiance and code of silence.
