horseradish
noun

- a plant with large green leaves and a long white root with a strong sharp taste

(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

---
The horseradish plant belongs to the the Brassicaceae family, which also includes mustard, wasabi, broccoli, and cabbages. It grows up to 1.5 meters tall and is mainly cultivated for its large white, tapered root. Horseradish has been cultivated since antiquity. According to Greek mythology, the Delphic Oracle told Apollo that the horseradish was worth its weight in gold. Horseradish was also known in Egypt in 1500 BC.

The origin of the name is unknown, although there are several theories including a misinterpretation of the German word for horseradish - Meerrettich - as "mare rettich", a mare being a female horse. More likely though is the fact that horse was once used in the sense of "strong" to describe other edibles like horse mushroom and horse parsley.
