American journalist and social commentator Ambrose Bierce once said, "There are four kinds of homicide: felonious, excusable, justifiable, and praiseworthy." Bierce, well-known for his sharp tongue, was of course being satirical. Homicide is no laughing matter.

However, English common law does divide homicide into two broad categories: felonious (from "felony", which describes extremely serious crimes) and non-felonious. The latter category includes so-called excusable or justifiable homicide - such as killing someone in self-defence - and culpable homicide, which is the act of killing someone without wilful intent (U.S. = manslaughter).

Homicide stems from the Latin homicidium (homo - human being + cidium - the act of killing). The suffix "cide" can be added to almost any word to describe killing or destroying something specific (After his PC crashed for the tenth time, he committed computercide). The following are some of the most common:

- pesticide/insecticide = a chemical substance used to kill harmful insects, small animals, wild plants and other unwanted organisms

- herbicide = a chemical which is used to destroy plants, especially weeds

- suicide = the act of killing yourself intentionally

- genocide = the murder of a whole group of people, especially a whole nation, race or religious group
