hoarder noun
- a person who accumulates things and hides them away for future use
(webdictionary.co.uk)
--- According to the Mayo Clinic, hoarders are defined as people who excessively collect items and have the inability to discard them. Hoarders often create such cramped living conditions that their homes may be filled to capacity, with only narrow pathways winding through stacks of clutter.
Some people also collect animals, keeping dozens or hundreds of pets often in unsanitary conditions. An Arizona woman was arrested in 2011 after sheriffs responded to a complaint. When they arrived, they found nearly 200 dogs and 50 cats in addition to chickens, ducks and pigs.
On the other hand, they say that one man's rubbish is another man's treasure. That's why drawing the line between a collector and a hoarder can be difficult sometimes. The following are examples of some of the world's largest and strangest collections.
- Michael Zarnock of Utica, New York claims to have more than 8,000 Hot Wheels cars.
- Dan Brown, owner of the Bellaire (Ohio) Toy and Plastic Brick Museum says he has over 4 million Lego bricks.
- A man who goes by the name of Graham Barker has been hoarding the fluff from his belly button since 1984. Barker, who stores the lint in three glass jars, began collecting it because he wondered how much he would need to stuff a pillow.
- We also found the Air Sickness Bag Virtual Museum which has more than 2,500 images of different "barf bags."
- Phil Miller is a "sucrologist," meaning he collects those sugar packets in restaurants and coffee shops. He has over 8,000 packets.
- Just when you thought there was only one banana grower in the world, which will go unnamed here, Becky Martz has a collection of more than 5,000 banana labels. The question is whether she ate all those bananas.
