Hitchbot, sometimes written hitchBOT, is a so-called anthropomorphic (having human characteristics) robot. It was created by a team of Ontario-based communications researchers studying the relationship between people and technology.
Dressed with garden-gloves, the talking robot used its thumb to traverse what is affectionately known as the Great White North, or Canada, travelling from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Kelowna, British Columbia, which is essentially across the entire country.
The robot’s co-creator David Smith, who teaches in the department of communication studies at Ontario’s McMaster University, said they wanted to situate robotics and artificial technologies into unlikely scenarios and push the limits of what robotics is capable of.
The creators also programmed hitchbot to track its adventures online and take pictures to post on Twitter and Instagram. Its Instagram following was nearly 11,000 people, its Facebook account had more than 41,000 "likes" and it has nearly 32,000 Twitter followers.
