heirloom
noun

- a valuable object that has been given by older members of a family to younger members of the same family over many years

(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

---
Heirloom was once a legal term in England that described an item of personal property that due to its long-term usage was considered the property of family by inheritance. The owner of such an heirloom was allowed to dispose of it during his lifetime, but could not give it away through his last will and testament.

If he died without having a written will, the object automatically passed to his heir. Otherwise it passed to whoever took over the estate under his will. Such heirlooms are now almost unknown, but the word has acquired the common meaning of items of special, endearing value, such as furniture or pictures, handed down from one generation to the next.
