Something happens and I'm HEAD OVER HEELS
I never find out till I'm head over heels
Something happens and I'm head over heels
Ah don't take my heart
Don't break my heart
Don't throw it away

As millions celebrate Valentine's Day, many couples will enjoy the feeling of being "head over heels." Originally though, this expression was not used in this sense. It referred to being temporarily the wrong way up. It is one of many similar phrases for describing things that are not in their usual state: upside-down, topsy-turvy, topple up tail, arse over tea-kettle, ass backwards, and bass-ackwards.

Interestingly, "head over heels" was first expressed as "heels over head" and was used to describe doing a somersault. This actually makes more sense because head over heels is our normal state of being. In any case, the transition from heels over head to head over heels occurred in the 18th century, followed by the sense of being in love in the 19th century.

Saint Valentine's Day, also known as Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. Several martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines associated with February 14.

One popular account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. An addition to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell.

Today, apart from the opportunity to express one's love and devotion, Valentine's Day is big business and one of the flower and greeting card industry's most important sales periods.
