head-down generation
slang phrase

- the (younger) generation of portable electronic device users

---
The expression "head-down generation" is a relatively new term that first surfaced in an interview with a BBC employee. In discussing the radio broadcaster's listenership strategy, he was quoted as saying:

"The key for Radio 1 in making the BBC relevant for young people is to crack the smartphone generation, or as I call them, the head-down generation. That's the battle we are up against. There are so many things young people can do with their time now and a lot of that is to do with the mobile phone."

The obvious reference is to the meanwhile common habit of people constantly looking down at the screen of a portable electronic device, usually a mobile phone. Although the term normally implies the younger generation - the most prolific users of mobile phone technology - the head down posture is not necessarily restricted to this group. After all, what's to keep grandma from whipping out her mobile phone to show friends pictures of the grandkids?
