outgun
verb

- to beat a person or team by using greater skill

- to win a war or fight by having more weapons than the other side

(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

---
Outgunned stems from the idea of a military that has more and/or better weapons (guns) than its enemy, thus giving it an advantage that leads to victory. Gun is used in several other expressions:

- a hired gun = a professional killer (Hired guns attempted to kill the head of the local Mafia.)

- to gun for = to go after something seriously (Bob is gunning for a promotion to sales manager.)

- to go great guns = to proceed or perform with great speed, skill, or success (The company went great guns in the second quarter, increasing revenues by 20 percent.)

- hold a gun to someone's head = to put pressure on someone (You'll have to put a gun to his head before he will do anything.)

- under the gun = to be under pressure or great threat (The team was under the gun to complete the project by Friday.)
