DID YOU KNOW?

According to Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, the expression at large, as in being free after escaping confinement, stems from the French phrase "prendre le large," meaning to stand out at sea, or occupy the main ocean, so as to be free to move.

Most of the time we read about criminals being at large. But from time to time we hear amusing tales of escape from the animal world, like Juan the Andean spectacled bear at the Berlin Zoo.

In 2004, Juan made a daring escape by riding a log across a moat designed to keep the bears in their habitats. He then climbed a wall to gain his freedom. His first stop was the zoo's playground where he terrified parents, rode the merry-go-round and went down the slide. He then began to wander around again.

The zookeepers tried to distract him by placing a bicycle in his path. He briefly inspected the bike, but it was just long enough to allow his handlers to shoot him with a tranquilliser dart. The sleeping bear was carried back to his enclosure.

The director of the zoo seemed unconcerned about the potential danger to children on the playground: "Spectacled bears eat both vegetables and meat but children tend not to be on their menu."
