Non-native speakers may be a bit bewildered by the use of “nice” to emphasise an adjective like “angry” - in today's OWAD “nice” acts as an intensifier.

Here are some other examples where "nice" intensifies:

- nice and slow = We drove nice and slow all the way down the coast of California

- nice and smooth  = he sings with a nice and smooth voice

- nice and simple = the new software is nice and simple to use

- nice and friendly = most of my colleagues are nice and friendly

- nice and clean = the house looks nice and clean now
