WORD ORIGIN

"If God meant us to touch our toes, he would have put them further up on our body." This anonymous quote nicely summarises the opinion of some people when it comes to sports and exercise. The ancient Greeks maintained a different point of view though. They felt that athletics was vital to every young man's education.

For this reason they created the "gymnasium" as a public institution where males over 18 received training in physical exercise. It was later expanded to include lectures and discussions on philosophy, literature and music, eventually serving as a place for young men to receive their education.

The original Greek word was "Gymnasion," from the verb "gumnazein," meaning to exercise in the nude. This is perhaps an odd concept today, but athletes in ancient Greece trained in the nude as a means of showing appreciation for the male body and as a tribute to the Gods.

In modern English, the word gym is a general term for any indoor facility, such as school gyms or so-called fitness studios, where people can exercise.

In some European countries such as Germany, Gymnasium refers to advanced-curricula high schools that are designed to prepare students for university. Physical education, or PE as it called in most English speaking countries, is included in the program, but the emphasis of course is on getting the brain in shape.
