Did you know?
fling noun
- a brief romantic relationship
(American Heritage Dictionary)
--- The noun fling, as in an affair, stems from the verb fling, a 13th century term of uncertain (but probably Scandinavian) origin that at first meant to attempt or attack. From this original sense, the verb further developed into several other meanings including:
- to throw with violence (She flung a glass against the wall after discovering her husband had a fling with the neighbour)
- to put or send unexpectedly (The fling she had with an old boyfriend flung the couple into a crisis)
- to engage (oneself) in an activity with abandon and energy (They flung themselves into a month-long fling)
- to abandon, throw away (Even though they worked together, they flung all common sense away and had a secret fling)
The noun form of fling developed later and in addition to a short romantic relationship can also refer to a brief period of giving in to some kind of temptation.
