Just HANG LOOSE, have some fun,
Sipping on a drink, lying in the sun
Don't try to fight it, it ain't no use
Cause when you're in Hawaii, you should just hang loose!

hang loose
verb phrase

- to stay calm and relaxed

---
Hang loose is the unofficial motto of the state of Hawaii and in two words describes the island's relaxed lifestyle. This expression is also an integral part of the surfing culture's unique jargon. Surfer language has found its way into English slang through several other words and expressions:

- hot dogging = to show off, usually through a daring stunt or manoeuvre such as when skiing or surfing

- bro, brah, dude = a buddy or friend

- wipe out = to destroy completely or in sports to lose one's balance and fall, as when skiing or surfing

Hang loose even has a visual counterpart. Also referred to as the Shaka sign, it is a gesture formed by extending the thumb and smallest finger while keeping the three middle fingers curled, and raising the hand as in salutation with the back of the hand facing the person that is being greeted.
