--- Hollywood legend John Wayne, who won an Oscar for best actor in the 1949 western True Grit, showed a lot of grit off the screen as well. The liberal-minded Harvard University theatre - The Hasty Pudding - once honoured the conservative-thinking Wayne with their annual Hasty Pudding Award. Instead of a limousine, Wayne arrived in an army tank.
During a question and answer session, a woman in the crowd asked, "What do you think of women's liberation?" Wayne responded in typical fashion, "I think women's lib is fine, as long as they're home by six to cook my dinner."
In another exchange, a student asked, "Mr. Wayne, do you look at yourself as an American legend?" "Well," Wayne drily replied, "not being a Harvard man, I don't look at myself any more than necessary."
