Mark Twain once defined public servants (politicians or government employees) as "persons chosen by the people to distribute the graft." This is no doubt an unfair stereotype since most people who work in the public sector are not involved in graft. But corruption still occurs and when it does it often makes the headlines.

Graft also takes place in organizations other than the public sector. If a member of a non-profit organization, such as an international football association for instance, receives money or gifts in return for using his or her influence to make something happen, that's a good example of graft.

The origin of the term graft is unclear, but may stem from another sense of the word which refers to "hard work." This stemmed from the sense of graft as a trench or ditch, which of course is something that has to be dug. And that's hard work, whereas the corruption sense of graft is not a particularly difficult task. Unless you consider holding out your hand a difficult chore.

Graft is also a noun that refers to a surgical operation in which tissue is transplanted or the act of "grafting" a shoot or twig from one living plant to another to either reproduce it or repair it (this is often done with trees).
