- Grand Old Party (= a name for the Republican Party)
(Cambridge Dictionary)
Not to be confused with GDP (Gross Domestic Product), the GOP is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, the other being its historic rival, the Democratic Party.
Founded mainly by anti-slavery activists in 1854, the GOP dominated politics nationally and in the majority of northern States for most of the period between 1860 and 1932.
The party's platform is based on American conservatism that promotes free market capitalism, free enterprise, business, a strong national defence, deregulation, labour union restrictions, socially conservative policies and traditional values, usually with Christian overtones.
The nickname of the Republican Party didn't get attached to it until 1888. It was previously used by Southern Democrats. But after the Republicans won back the Presidency and Congress after a long absence, the Chicago Tribune proclaimed: "Let us be thankful that under the rule of the Grand Old Party ... these United States will resume the onward and upward march which the election of Grover Cleveland in 1884 partially arrested."
