The Senate Republican proposal to give every taxpayer $100 caused an outcry around the country and disgust among fiscal conservatives. "People see through gimmicks," said Wisconsin Republican Paul Ryan, who calls the $100 rebate "GOOFY" political theatrics."

I also found child's play - stuff that was not considered serious, but GOOFY - was the stuff I liked to do, so I still do it as an adult.

WORD ORIGIN
According to the Barnhart Concise Dictionary of Etymology, the adjective goofy first appeared around 1921. It was formed from the noun goof – a stupid person or fool – which is probably a variant of the dialectal English goff from around 1869, meaning foolish clown or a silly fellow.

Despite of or perhaps because of its goofy nature, Matt Groening’s The Simpson Family animated television series is one of the longest-running cartoon series in U.S. history. Groening conceived The Simpsons as part of a series of animated short films about a dysfunctional family. He named the characters after members of his own family (with the exception of Bart, which is an anagram for brat). Hollywood producer James L. Brooks then adapted it into a 30-minute prime time television series.

Since its debut in 1989, more than 400 episodes have been broadcast over the past 18 television seasons. Although goofy, The Simpsons takes an often satirical look at politics, pop culture and American society in general, thus appealing to both young people and adults.

It has not been without controversy though. Some conservative groups in the U.S. complain that Bart Simpson, who frequently escapes punishment from his parents for his rebellious attitude, is a poor role model for children. Former U.S. President George H. W. Bush once said "We're going to keep trying to strengthen the American family. To make them more like the Waltons and less like the Simpsons."
