Going viral is another expression for viral marketing and viral advertising, which Wikipedia defines as "marketing techniques that use social networks to produce increases in brand awareness or to achieve other marketing objectives (such as product sales) through self-replicating viral processes, similar to the spread of living viruses or computer viruses."

Going viral can happen by word of mouth or be enhanced by the network effects of the Internet. Viral marketing may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, ebooks, brandable software, images, or text messages. The ultimate goal of viral marketers is to create successful messages with high social network appeal and with a high probability of being presented and spread by social network users within a short period of time.

Going viral often has little to do with product marketing or advertising though. A two-minute online video clip of a Canadian teenage boy wielding a Star Wars light sabre has been viewed more than 900 million times. That's more than the combined populations of the United States, Indonesia and Brazil. Although this may seem a bit bewildering to many, it represents one of the best examples of "going viral." According to The Viral Factory, this clip is the most viewed online video ever.

These types of videos are also referred to as "Internet meme", which describes a concept that is propagated through the World Wide Web. A meme is an idea, behaviour or style that spreads from person to person within a culture. The idea may take the form of a hyperlink, video, picture, website, hashtag, or just a word or phrase.
