Did you know?
geoengineering noun
- the deliberate large-scale manipulation of an environmental process that affects the earth's climate, in an attempt to counteract the effects of global warming
(Oxford English Dictionary)
--- Geoengineering is a controversial subject. On the one hand, proponents view it as a viable solution to the issue of rising levels of carbon dioxide. Critics argue that no one really knows what the long-term impacts are.
The idea behind geoengineering is to deploy "global-scale" technologies to control the planet's climate. Most of the ideas are only on paper. Here are a few examples:
- Cloud reflectivity enhancement = using fine sea water spray to whiten clouds and increase cloud reflectivity
- Ocean nourishment = this includes iron fertilisation of the oceans
- Space sunshade—obstructing solar radiation with space-based mirrors or other structures
- Intensive forestry - to build up more forested areas to increase the capture of carbon in trees, partially through gene-modification techniques
Note: Geoengineering was added to the 3rd Edition of the Oxford Dictionary of English published in August 2010, along with vuvuzela and toxic debt.

"There needs to be a lot more public discussion about geoengineering before experimenting with some of the concepts."
