geocaching noun
- the outdoor sport or game of searching for hidden objects by using Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates posted on the Internet
(Random House Dictionary)
--- Geocaching is a high-tech version of treasure or scavenger hunting. It is an outdoor sporting activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device with navigation technology (iPhone for instance) to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", anywhere in the world. Cache, which stems from the Old French "cacher" (to hide) refers to a hiding or storing place for goods or valuables (in computer science it is a fast storage buffer in the central processing unit of a computer).
A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook where the geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name. Larger containers such as Tupperware can also be used for trading items like toys or inexpensive trinkets.
Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries and on all seven continents, including Antarctica. After 10 years of activity there are over 1.3 million active geocaches published on various websites. There are over 5 million geocachers worldwide.
