WORD ORIGIN

FYI, an abbreviation for "For Your Information", is a classic acronym commonly used in e-mail and Internet chat services. Originally a military term, it's an all-purpose alternative to the phrase "by the way" and can be used in different contexts:

- to simply bring something to someone's attention

FYI, the server will be down from 08:00 to 12:00 today for maintenance.

- to signify the importance or relevance of a piece of information (note the placement of the abbreviation within the sentence)

Then we talked about the new corporate logo. That, FYI, was the last agenda item.

- to signify a serious, business-like tone, usually in a disagreement or as part of a critique

- FYI, the system didn't crash until after you installed that new application.
