You don't have to be Freud to understand the psychology of "free." The joy of getting something for nothing is part of our nature. A stroll through the exhibit hall of any trade fair is the best way to see this principle at work.

Trade fair visitors are inevitably drawn to the freebies, filling their bags (which are also free) with everything from candy, pens, buttons and stickers to yo-yos, baseball caps, luggage tags and a lot of things we really don't need. But we take them anyway, Because they're free.

Many people may not admit it, but if we visit a company and see a container at the reception desk full of pens with the company's logo, our first reaction is to take one because we assume they're freebies.

Marketers have long understood this concept. The web has made the use of "freeconomics" much easier meanwhile, as evidenced by the enormous selection of freebie music, movies and personal computer software. This development has meanwhile transformed the old saying, "There is no such thing as a free lunch" into an outdated concept.
