Fracas is an 18th century word that stems from the French fracas and further from the Italian fracasso (uproar, crash).

A fracas usually, but not always, involves a physical confrontation, such as what often happens in (or outside of) bars and pubs: "Two men have been charged after a fracas outside a bar in the city left a man with serious head injuries." (The West Australian)

Passionate football fans have been known to be involved in fracases as well: "Fans sentenced after station fracas." (The London Standard) Or how about passionate iPhone fans? "Fracas Outside Beijing Apple Store" (Wall Street Journal)

It's not often that one reads about the ice cream man becoming involved in a fracas, but as the saying goes, there's a first time for everything: "An ice cream seller caught on film in a fracas with a competitor in Lancashire has been convicted of assault." (BBC News)

Trivia note: our favourite synonym for fracas is "batrachomyomachia," (a silly fight). This Greek term literally means 'battle of the frogs and mice" and stems from a short Greek mock-epic poem commonly attributed to Homer.
