WORD ORIGIN

A fortnight is a unit of time equal to two weeks. The term is common in the British Isles and many Commonwealth countries such as Australia, where wages, salaries and social security benefits are often paid every two weeks. The term is rarely used in North America. It is a contraction of the Old English "feowertyne niht", literally fourteen nights, and is a reference to the ancient Germanic method of counting by nights.

In Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese respectively, the terms quincena, quindici giorni, quinze jours and quinzena - all meaning fifteen days - are used to name a time span of roughly two weeks.

Some fields of science have adopted fortnight to come up with unusual and amusing measurements. In computer science for instance, a microfortnight is equal to one millionth of a fortnight, or 1.2096 seconds.

The speed unit of one furlong per fortnight is a mere 0.166 millimetres per second, or roughly 1 centimetre per minute. Furlong, by the way, equates to around 200 metres. Although it was eliminated as an official measurement in 1985, it is still used in thoroughbred horse racing to describe the distance of the races.
