To forgo or forego, that is the question. These two words, although they technically mean two different things, are sometimes applied incorrectly. Because they are pronounced the same and have only one letter that differentiates them, it is easy to understand how this can happen.

Forego, which originally meant "to go before," appeared first. Forgo then developed with the meaning of doing without something or passing up voluntarily. In a case of Darwinian etymology, forgo began to be used in the sense of "go before." The result was that with the exception of legal documents and the expression "a foregone conclusion" (an outcome that is assured in advance), forego more or less became an endangered species.

Although one can still find occasional instances of forego in the sense of going before, today it is mainly an alternative spelling of forgo. These two words serve as an excellent illustration of the inconsistency that sometimes plagues the English language. The following two headlines about the same subject is a good example (keep in mind these are major news organizations, not local gossip sheets):

- Ecobank's Tanoh to Forgo 2012 Bonus as Bank Reviews Governance (Bloomberg)

- Ecobank Chief to Forego Bonus in Bid to Quell Unease (Financial Times)

The occasional mix-up with forgo and forego appears to be a foregone conclusion.
