Did you know?
follow suit idiom
- to do as another has done, follow an example
(American Heritage Dictionary)
--- In card games, the suit refers to any of the four sets of 13 playing cards (clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades) in a standard deck, the members of which bear the same marks. One of the key rules when playing a card in many games is to "follow suit," meaning you must play a card from the same suit that the round started with. Thus the figurative sense refers to following the actions of someone else.
Card games have enhanced English with a wide range of colourful idioms, many of which are suitable for business situations or negotiations:
- play with a full deck = to function as if one is mentally sound (usually stated in the negative – I don’t think he’s playing with a full deck!)
- play the trump card = to use the most powerful or effective strategy (Once we played our trump card, the negotiations started to go our way)
- call someone’s bluff = to force someone to prove that what they are saying is true (I think it’s time we called their bluff)
- hold all the cards = to be in a strong or advantageous position (We got the deal because we were holding all the cards)
