The expression "flu jab" is an informal, short form of "influenza vaccination," the medical term for an inoculation (introducing an antigenic substance in the body to increase immunity to a specific disease) against influenza, an acute contagious viral infection characterized by inflammation of the respiratory tract and by fever, chills and muscular pain.

Flu is short for influenza and the word jab, which means to stab or pierce something, refers to the injection with a needle. While the use of flu jab is on the rise, the expression "flu shot" remains the most common.

The word influenza stems from the Italian "influenza," which originally meant influence of the stars (from the Medieval Latin influential, the root of the English influence). Influenza has been used since the 16th century in Italian to describe diseases under the notion of an astral or occult influence (influenza di febbre scarlattina = scarlet fever).

Influenza is sometimes referred to as "grippe," which probably stemmed from the same word in French that referred to a seizure, supposedly in reference to how the throat constricts when suffering from the flu or a severe cold. German also uses the term Grippe for the flu, but it is capitalized as with all German nouns.

Jonas Salk and Thomas Francis developed the first vaccine against flu viruses in 1938. This vaccine was used to protect the U.S. military forces during World War II. Dr. Salk used his experience to develop an effective polio vaccine in 1952.
