The word "farm" is Middle English that derived from the Old French ferme and the medieval Latin firma, meaning a fixed payment, and from the Latin firmare, to fix or settle. The noun originally denoted a fixed annual amount payable as rent or tax. It came to denote a lease, and in the early 16th century, land leased for farming. The verb sense of growing crops or keeping livestock dates from the early 19th century.

The expression "farm out" was first recorded in the 16th century and was used mainly to refer to farmlands leased out by royalty and rich landowners. A similar system called "sharecropping" occurred extensively in colonial Africa, Scotland and Ireland and came into wide use in the southern United States during the Reconstruction era (1865–1877). It differed from farming out in that the tenant gave a share of the crops to the landlord in lieu of rent or lease payments.

Farm out meanwhile means any type of work that is given to someone else to do. Called outsourcing or subcontracting in the business world, companies farm out work because they lack the required expertise or resource, or because someone else can do it at a lower cost.

Farm out can also refer to the practice of arranging for a child to be looked after by someone, usually for payment, such as in a foster home. And in the world of sports, farming out is when a team sends a player temporarily to another team in return for a fee.
