Because computer systems vary widely, that beautifully designed resume with carefully set margins and tabs could turn into an EYESORE on the hiring manager's computer. If you design the resume in a font that the recipient lacks, it will appear in a default font and you'll lose control of how it looks.

WORD ORIGIN

A "sore" is something that causes pain, distress, misery or sorrow. Thus an eyesore is literally something that is painful to look at.

A Canadian man has now given new meaning to the term eyesore:

He is apparently the first person to undergo an eyeball-tattooing procedure! He asked a tattoo artist at a Canadian tattoo convention to turn the white of his eyes, or the sclera, completely blue. This required more than forty ink injections and the aid of a syringe. The tattoo artist allegedly tried to use the traditional tattooing needle, but the procedure failed.

The man, who calls himself "Mr. Pauly Unstoppable," responded to questions from reporters by commenting:

"I really have to emphasise again that the procedure was extensively researched and done by people who were aware of the risks and possible complications and that it should not be casually attempted. Now that this experiment has been started, please wait for this to heal, or for me to go blind before trying it yourself."

In other words, it may be a while before the world can determine if Mr. Pauly is a "sight for sore eyes."
