They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or is it in the "eyeball" of the beholder? Although the eye is technically part of the eyeball, the two nouns are often used synonymously. Likewise, the verbs "to eye" and "to eyeball" are for the most part interchangeable. The only difference is that eyeball is used more frequently in informal situations.

Eyeball is also used in some expressions such as:

- eyeball to eyeball = face to face or in person, often in a confrontation (They went eyeball to eyeball over who was responsible for the project.)

- up to one's eyeballs = to have too much of something (I'm up to my eyeballs in work at the moment.) Other body parts can be used to mean the same thing, such as "up to my neck" or "up to my ears."
