A true test of a man's character is not when things are HUNKY-DORY and the team is winning. A true test is when times are tough and when facing adversity.

ORIGIN

There are several different theories about the origin of this word. One refers to a street in Yokohama, Japan called Huncho-Dori. American sailors headed for this street when their ships docked in Yokohama to do what many sailors like to do after being at sea for a long time. As the street led directly back to the docks, once the drunken sailors found their way to this street after a night of fun, then everything was "hunky-dory."

Another suggestion stems from a song by the Christy Minstrels (a black-face music group) during the American Civil War. The song contained a line about "red-hot hunky-dory contraband." The song was a huge hit and hunky-dory became popular slang during this period.

Still another theory revolves around the Dutch word "honk" meaning goal or home, such as in the game of tag where children try to catch each other before getting back to home, like a tree or other object. The idea is that once you reached "honk", everything would be hunky-dory.
