ensconce
verb

- to make yourself very comfortable or safe in a place or position

Cambridge Dictionary

---
Ensconce is from the late 16th century and originally meant to "cover with a fort" (en = make, put in + sconce = small fortification, shelter). Sconce may have evolved via French, but likely stems from the Dutch "schans" (earthwork), which is related to the German "Schanze" (military entrenchment, small earthwork and also another name for a ski jump).

Ensconce is often written in conjunction with "safely", such as: "The royal baby has finally arrived, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are safely ensconced in Bucklebury with little Prince Georgie."

Although this usage is quite common, linguistically speaking it is a redundant phrase since ensconced already means to be "safely and/or comfortably settled into a place."

Other common redundant phrases in English include:

- collaborate together (collaborate by itself means to work together)

- end result, final outcome (results and outcomes are by definition at the end of something)

- free gift (who wants to pay for a gift?)

- past history (this is as opposed to the present or future history)

- new innovation (every PR department in the world has used this – an innovation is by definition new)

- completely unanimous (English dictionaries define unanimous as "in complete agreement")
