embrace the suck slang phrase
- the situation is bad, but deal with it
(Los Angeles Times)
--- The expression "embrace the suck" is what former US Army Colonel Austin Bay calls "warrior slang" in his military jargon book titled "Embrace The Suck." Originally created by US soldiers during the Iraq War, embrace the suck is both a command (essentially: do your job) and a piece of advice from the military experience (if you don't do your job, you will die).
To embrace is to accept something in this context. The "suck" is a metaphor for a difficult situation and transforms the now common slang adjective "suck" (bad, low quality) into a noun. Anyone who has spent time in the US has certainly heard the expression "that sucks" often enough. It's an odd adjective that is meanwhile far removed from its vulgar origins.
Some of the most creative slang in English derives from the armed forces. The reason can be traced to the comradeship of military life, shared suffering and something called "comic relief," a concept that refers to finding relief from tension in the form of humour.
In his book Colonel Bay entertains readers with pages of additional slang such as "Fobbits," a negative term for soldiers who never leave the forward operations base (FOB), a protected area for soldiers, and John Wayne Driving School (crashing a military vehicle whilst teaching new soldiers how to operate it).
